Video Games: They Way We Where

Video games have been around for more years than most people know. Most people today can remember the Pac-Man, Pac-Woman era. In reality video games have been in our daily lives for far longer than that. In fact one of the first video games on record goes back to 1947, where the first ever patent was filed in January of that year and that patent was issued in December 1948. Little did we know that this would come to be one of the hottest commodities to hit the American and International markets. One of the earliest video games was created by the same man who developed the atomic bomb.

In the 50s and 60s a video was being patented to run on computers. This became a reality, the problem was that little was known about computers and they were so expensive that few people had them, and this program was run on a platform called oscilloscopes, which was a piece of electronic equipment that could show two dimensional graphs. These were located at colleges and universities.

The 70s brought about new developments in the video industry. In 1972 a patent was granted for the release of a home video console. In was large and bulky, but it satisfied the video game demands of the gaming public. Later, in the 70s and early 80s, along came the development and release of Atari. This lasted for only a few short years, when the video market took a big dive. The reason for this was that there were so many entities producing these video games (most of which were the same game) that the market became flooded. The industry had really gone stale, because how many versions of the same video game can there be. One just seemed to be an updated version of the other. The public became bored with this and needed something fresh and new.

In 1989 the market once again had a new video game gadget, Nintendo Game Boy. This was new and exciting and the games were different, challenging and, best of all, you could take it with you wherever you went. There were several competitors who put their video games on the market by this time, but even today Game Boy seems to be the best selling hand held video game and console.

The 1990s came alive with new and improved versions of consoles for video games. Nintendo was overtaken by the newcomer, Sonys Play Station. The public went wild and now anyone who had the Nintendo switched and had to have a Play Station, with more bells and whistles than had been seen before.

Up until now all video games had been developed for computer type consoles, hand held consoles and computers. 2003 saw a new direction come to life with the development of video games on cellular phones, this came from none other that Nokia.

The video game industry has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry today. Almost every person in the world has at one time or another in their life either played a video game, whether it be on the old oscilloscopes, coin operated consoles, hand held consoles, home computers or the cell phone. It is an industry that is growing by leaps and bounds on a daily bases.

Do You Own A Mobile Phone?

Mobile phones have a longer history than you might expect. The first mobile phones were, in fact, in use in 1946, when the Swedish police had them in their police cars. These quickly spread to the US and elsewhere, and by the 1950s devices existed that basically looked like very large versions of todays mobile phones.

Mobile phones stayed an expensive, minority item until the 80s, when they became car phones. These phones were designed for permanent installation in a car, meaning that their size and power usage wasnt that much of an issue. Companies started buying huge numbers of these for businesspeople to have in their cars, and the industry saw the kind of demand that was out there for mobile phones.

As technology moved forwards and got cheaper thanks to the massive demand for car phones, the first truly mobile phones came about. In the 90s, advances in battery technology meant that phones could stop being bricks and started becoming the small, sleek devices we know today.

Since the mid-90s, however, surprisingly little has happened to mobile phones. Sure, theyve got prettier, with their clamshell form factors and silver cases, but in terms of phone technology theyre pretty much in the same place. Instead of wanting better phone service, people have started to use their phones as cameras, or mp3 players, or for playing games on the go.

The next generation of the phone technology itself is here already: its known as 3G, and youve probably heard of it. For some reason, however, no-one really seems to care about 3G. Sure, you can watch videos on your mobile, but it costs a bomb, and few people really want to do that. It turns out that those tiny phones have an unexpected limitation their screens are too small for anyone to really be interested in using them for Internet access or any of the other fancy things you can do with 3G. Unless a killer app comes along, it looks like were going to have todays phones for a long time.

How Computer Viruses Work and How to Protect your Computer

Many people are afraid of tinkering with their computers because of the fear that they might inadvertently introduce a computer virus into the computer system.

Computer viruses have become the technological bogeyman that scares computer users all over the world. We have all heard of how dangerous computer viruses are and how it can damage your data. Of course, aided by the bloated images Hollywood movies paint with regards to computer viruses, a big majority now have this insane (but mostly unfounded) fears about it.

It is true that computer viruses are dangerous. Anyone who has lost vital information in their computers because of a computer virus will know how big a damage it can cause. But computer viruses are not these insidiously little pieces of code that could wreak havoc on the world. If you know what to do when you get a virus in your computer then you can definitely limit, if not totally stop, the damage it can cause.

But what is a computer virus? Well, it is a software with a small imprint that would usually attach itself on to a legitimate program or software. Every time this program is executed the virus is also executed and it tries to reproduce itself by attaching to other programs or it immediately starts affecting the computer. A computer virus and email virus basically have the same modus operandi, the difference though is that an email virus would attach itself to an email message or automatically send itself using the addresses in the address book in order to infect the people who receive the email.

A computer virus is usually embedded in a larger program, often a legitimate piece of software. The virus will be run when the legitimate software is executed. The computer virus would load itself into the memory of the computer and then it will seek out any programs where it can likely attach itself. When a likely program is found then the virus would modify the file in order to add the virus code to the program. The virus would usually run before the actual legitimate program runs. In fact, the virus would usually perform the infection first before it commands the legitimate program to run. This process is so fast that no one would even notice that a virus was executed. With two programs now infected (the original program and the first infected program), the same process would be repeated whenever either program is launched worsening the level of infection.

After the infection phase, or even within the middle of the process of infection, the virus would usually start its attack on the system. The level of attack can range from silly actions like flashing messages on the screen to actually erasing sensitive data.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can do in order to protect your computer from viruses. Among the steps that you can take are:

* The simplest way to avoid a virus is to install a legitimate and effective antivirus program in your computer. The antivirus program is designed to look out for any kind of activity that could be seen as similar to a virus attack or infestation and it automatically stops it.

* You can opt to use a more secure operating system in your computer. For example, Unix is a secure operating system because the security features built into it prevents a virus from actually doing what it is programmed to do.

* Enable Macro Virus Protection in all of the Microsoft applications resident in your computer. Additionally, you should avoid running macros in a document unless you have a good idea of what these macros are going to do.

* Avoid using programs that you have downloaded on the internet especially when they come from dubious sources.

* Never open an email attachment that contains an executable file these are files with the EXE, COM and VBS extensions.

That's Entertainment: Adding Some Show Biz to Your Tradeshow Exhibit

What makes one tradeshow exhibit memorable and another so-so? What can exhibitors do to get attendees talking after the show? What can motivate visitors who may have had no previous intention of visiting your booth decide that they definitely have to stop by?

Entertainment! According to tradeshow research, live presentations are the third most important reason why people remember the exhibit. Numbers one and two? Booth size and product interest. If you've got a limited exhibiting budget, hiring entertainment may be a cost-effective way to attract attention to your company without springing for the larger, pricier display space.

What are your options?

Entertainment options at tradeshows are almost endless. Any form of live presentation can work, including:

staged product demonstrations
theatrical skit
magician
game show
choreography
video
audio
robot
singers or musicians

The key is to have entertainment that acts as an integral part of your marketing message. To do this, you need to know a few things:

What type of entertainment will appeal to your target audience?

A robot that dispenses free samples might go over big at a tech show but fall flat at a pet care industry show. Conversely, those wired types might be more puzzled than pleased by a troop of trained terriers. Know your target audience.

How much product information do you want to convey via the entertainment?

Some entertainment formats are better than others for educating attendees about your products and services. Product demonstrations, especially those that draw participants from the audience, are a great way to get the crowd focused on what you're selling. Other acts focus on simply getting the company name and logo out there, such as a magician who uses the company's name as the 'Magic Word'.

What is your corporate image?

Any entertainment you select should positively reflect your company's image. This goes beyond a Western Wear company selecting a country singer to entertain the crowds -- attendees will hold you to a higher standard than that. Research the acts you're proposing to hire. Some acts may not be appropriate for mainstream companies -- ask to see a video of an average performance and ask yourself how would your customer base view the images.

With those questions in mind, decide what kind of entertainment you'd like to have and who will perform for the crowds. If you've decided on live product demonstrations, you may be able to use your own staff members, but other than that, you're generally better off hiring a pro.

How to Make the Most of Your Money

Hiring a professional entertainer is an expense. Ensure you get your money's worth by doing the following:

Identify how the presentation helps achieve your goals -- let the entertainer know clearly what you expect for them to do.

Create promotional activities centering around the entertainment. From pre-show direct mailings to on the floor interactions with attendees, make frequent mention of the event and have an incentive that will encourage attendees to visit your booth.

If your staff is not on stage, find ways to involve them in the presentation. Use them to gather the crowd or to capture and monitor pertinent information during the presentation. Let them know it's okay to be enthusiastic about the performance -- excitement is contagious, and you want an excited crowd.

What to Avoid

Good entertainment is expensive, bad entertainment can cost more than you will ever imagine. Protect your company's image and reputation by avoiding the following:

Crass, rude, or offensive acts. There are comedians who do very well with off color or hurtful humor, but the risk of alienating large segments of your consumer base by sponsoring one of these acts is too great.

Under-dressed entertainers. Scantily clad women and barely dressed men wiggling provocatively have no place at most shows. In fact, the aggressive use of "Booth Babes" has been so off-putting that some shows are banning them all together. Unless you're exhibiting an adult-themed show -- ie, one that caters to the sex industry or some travel shows -- have your entertainment keep their clothes on.

Acts that are clearly amateur. Tradeshow audiences are harsh. They won't be tolerant of second rate acts. Hire the best you can afford for better results.

THE VULCAN AND THE REDHEAD How Lucy Became the Power behind Starfleet

40 Years of Star Trek celebrated in Hollywood on November 14

Pop quiz. What do Lucille Ball, an ex-cop and a certain pointy-eared, green skinned alien have in common? Believe it or not, the cop and the Vulcan both worked for the redheaded comic icon during the early days of Star Trek.

Writer/producer Gene Roddenberrys military drama, The Lieutenant, caught the attention of senior executives at Desilu Productions, the production company owned by

Lucille Ball. By the early 1960s, Desilu was one of the most successful production companies in television and looking to expand and Gene Roddenberry was one of the writer/producers recruited by the studio.

Because Desilu had a first look deal with CBS, they originally took Star Trek there, only to be told that the network had already bought a science fiction show from producer Irwin Allen and just wanted ideas for what would become Lost in Space. Shortly thereafter, they successfully sold NBC on shooting a pilot.

Gene Roddenberry was an idealist in many ways and wanted Star Trek to reflect his own ideas of equality and social justice, making it the first network series to feature people of multiple nationalities, races and even species working together in that first pilot, The Cage. But apparently he crossed the line when he cast a woman, actress Majel Barrett, as the ships second in command.

NBC liked the concept, but hated the pilot, ordering a second one and in the process demoting Ms. Barrett from Executive Officer to nurse. But she ultimately married the boss and became the only actor to have been in every Star Trek series (Shes the voice of the ships computer on all the Trek series and had a recurring role in Star Trek: The Next Generation). As for that second pilot, it sold the series to NBC and began what would become one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.

Internet Marketing In South Africa

Part 1

This article is written from my own experiences, on the many problems facing South African based internet marketers. As a South African, myself, I have been trying to establish myself in internet marketing, for the last three years, but have come across a number of obstacles, which have proved seriously detrimental to my efforts. If you are South African, you can probably relate to this. If you have been battling what seem insurmountable odds, or if you are new to this concept, the message is the same. Stop wasting your time and your money on what is bound to be nothing less than - wasting your time and your money and I will explain why I said that. If you are an internet marketer, who is not South African, you should also read this article, because you are, unwittingly, leaving a lot of money on the table.

As we all know, South Africa is a part of Africa and is unfairly considered as a third world country, with the incorrect perception that this second largest continent, is nothing more than a waste of time, in the field of internet marketing. Well, I beg to differ. I will attempt to outline some of the misconceptions, obstacles, causes and remedies that I have encountered.

Yes, it is true that Africa has not progressed as much as the so called first world countries, but it is taking giant strides towards that. The advent of the internet, is only just beginning to catch on and the vast majority of the population, still have no access at all, but it is coming and it is coming fast. The internet is now available in all countries around the world and Africa is no different. We all know about the Nigerian internet scams. It is just that the vast majority of the population are poverty stricken and cannot afford the service, many are illiterate and the majority of the continent consists of large open spaces and small villages, making the physical provision of any basic services such as electricity, clean water, telephones and other communication devices extremely difficult. It is also an ongoing problem, where these desperate people steal cables and anything that can be traded for a meal. So, at this stage the internet is only available in the bigger metropolitan areas. It makes sense, doesn't it? Imagine how easy it is to supply services to a very densely populated area like England and where everyone is literate, in a fixed abode and living above the poverty line.

South Africa is the most technically advanced country in Africa and not far behind the standards of the other technology rich countries, but we are seriously lacking in internet technology. The internet is still very new to South Africa and has only just begun to catch on. It is experiencing a phenomenal growth rate and more and more businesses and individuals are "hooking up". All of the major cities are able to offer various means of connection such as ADSL, bluetooth, wireless and people are getting connected on their pcs, laptops and cellphones. The rural areas are battling to get connected and the only option available to them at this stage is the old antiquated dial up system using a telephone line, or via satellite. Promises have been made by government, that in a few years, everyone will be able to get a telephone and therefore, will have internet access available to them. This represents an enormous potential for wary marketers.

This is the overview of the situation with internet access in Africa and more particularly, South Africa. In the next article, we will look at some of the problems faced by South African users and the effects they have on internet marketing.

Part 2

Recent political changes, have reversed the fortunes of the South African population, in that the previously disadvantaged black community, now have money and the fine things in life, including access to the internet. Whereas before they wouldn't have been considered a viable market, they are now able to access the internet and dabble in small business. They want more. The whites, on the other hand, now find themselves out of work, unsure of the future and desperately seeking an alternative means of income. Both groups make good target markets, and both are particularly keen on using the internet to improve their lot in life. Remember, the internet is the biggest employer in the world and does not recognise age, colour, education, physical disabilities, wealth etc. People hear of the successes achieved on the internet and are fooled into looking for a quick fix. The internet and marketing via this medium, gives everyone an equal opportunity, well, almost everyone. Not South Africans, unfortunately.

Something like 70% of the S.A internet community, access the internet on the computers at their places of employment and as much as two hours each workday, is lost to private usage of the internet. Obviously these people are not all looking for ways to make money, but a large percentage are. These people who are newly exposed to all the hype on the internet are easily sucked in to believing the sales pitch. A lot of money is being spent on all sorts of junk and causing many heartbroken families. I was like that too. I firmly believed I could make a lot of money on the internet and set about joining all sorts of schemes. They do not work, but these desperate and nave people don't know that. Imagine if it was possible to guide them, to channel all that energy and curiosity and of course all that money into your bank account? If those people all trusted you and listened to your advice, if you were able to develop well thought out plans and business opportunities? If those people all joined your membership site?

One of the biggest drawbacks in S.A is that the internet and allied services are still very expensive and difficulty in finding a good service provider. Other first world countries have direct, fast, unlimited service at very reasonable prices and if they do experience problems with the service provider, there are plenty of others to try. According to a recent survey, something like 70% of all internet users, regularly access the 'net from their places of employment. The employer provides pcs and internet for business purposes and these curious people cheat their employers, by using his service for private usage. People send emails to friends, go shopping, download files, look at pornography, play games, gamble and read classifieds and other adverts for a better job, or an easy method of earning more money. From this survey it was estimated that as much as 85% of this target group were looking for self employment opportunities. Now, that's a lot of people! If the price of internet access was cheaper, all these people would use it at home. In fact, most do have internet access at home, but due to small caps on their usage and exorbitant prices, they rather use the employer's service. My point is that millions are searching for opportunities on the internet and the fact that crime is rampant only makes them more determined, to start a business from home. This is a huge potential for marketers. So what is the problem? Why are more South Africans actively getting involved? In the next article, we will start looking at these problem areas.

Part 3

As the internet is still relatively new to South Africa, we don't have many experts, or experience in the field. Those calling themselves experts, have only a limited knowledge and are far too expensive, when compared to overseas competitors. Simple things like service provision, web hosting, design and site building, software, tools, optimisation and advertising, are grossly overpriced. In most cases, they are bought overseas and resold here. I was given a quote, last month, of R120 ($17) per month, for basic, small webhosting service, excluding the domain registration and excluding the internet service provision. That was only the hosting! I was quoted R6000 ($857) for a designer, to look at one of my websites and to make a couple of small changes. It is crazy. We pay between R8 and R12 for an mp3 song, which costs from 10c to 90c in the U.S.A.

The state owned telecommunications company, Telkom, have the monopoly and squash all opposition. This has led to very highly priced access and an indifferent service. Nearly all packages offered by them, or sub contactor service providers, are restricted and capped. The actual service, the technical help and the customer relations are dreadful. The dial up service is very unreliable, the speeds are far lower than advertised, due to the poor state of the physical 'phone lines and the modems cost the earth. Take the U.S.A for example, where there are something like 800 million people with regular access and hundreds of competitors all offering better prices. The internet is a way of life and the huge speeds and download capabilities are taken for granted. In South Africa only something like 27 million have any form of access, largely due to the high costs. I got a quote from Telkom last week for satellite service. The basic installation cost is R3100 ($443), paid upfront. The monthly rental for the satellite service, capped at 3 Gigs, is R1263 ($180) and I still need a service provider who comes in at a basic charge of R284 ($40) plus consumption and of course I still need to keep my basic phone service for R110 ($16) plus call usage. Once the cap is reached, the service is suspended and additional packages can be purchased for R120 ($17) per 250 Megs. So in all it will cost me, monthly, around R2317 ($331) for a basic internet service of 4Gigs and a phone at home. Obviously there are cheaper options available in the cities, but living out of town, there is no choice. By the way, a friend living in the U.S.A got a similar quote for only $40 (R280) per month and his service boasted more facilities and no capping whatsoever.

For some reason, probably the old apartheid days, South Africa was boycotted by the wealthy first world countries and nobody has told them yet, that times have changed. South Africans suffer many discriminatory obstacles in the use of the internet and over the last few years, I have repeatedly been stumped by these. I have two messages of advice here. To the frustrated, aspirant South African marketers and those who will follow shortly, stop and listen. Do not waste more time and money trying all sorts of offers, you will not succeed. Rather use the time to brush up on your skills. Select a market niche and learn to use control panel, FTP, html, php, hyperlinks and all the other things, that will help you to run your business. Wait for the solution. I have enlisted the help of two of the world's top marketers to find a way around the problems, for you. To the marketers who are knowingly, or unknowingly discriminating against certain countries, you are leaving money on the table and missing out on a huge potential market. But, that's okay, I'll take it. These are some of the more general problems experienced by South Africans. In the next article, we will look at some of the specific problems affecting our marketing abilities.

Part 4

By now, you are probably wondering what other problems I'm talking about and how they are affecting our chances of success. If you have been involved for a while, you have probably encountered a few of these yourself and if you are a newbie, you are likely to still come across these problems soon.

There are obvious generalities that exclude South Africans from participating. We joined about 163 survey companies, when we first started out on the internet. We soon found out that most were American companies and only for Americans. That makes sense, when the product, or service being rated is only available there, but why do they mislead us and take our money. You must have seen the misleading ads about how quick and easy it is to earn money by doing simple surveys. A lot of them claim to be international, for anybody who understands English. The same thing happens. You are invited to do the survey, but as soon as you type in your address, you are told it is not available in your area. We wasted a lot of money on these. The foolproof unconditional money back guarantees are a lot of hogwash. Just ignore them.

The same thing happened with the typing services. My wife joined a few of them, with the promise, that as long as she had a basic working knowledge of English, no experience was necessary. Money as easy and fast to earn, on simple assignments. Well, she wasn't given any assignments and on enquiring as to the reason, she was told that we spell differently. That was not ever mentioned at the time of joining and was also money wasted. For Pete's sake, we speak and spell correctly. It is the Americans who changed the language.

We also joined a lot of companies who promised to pay us for surfing and reading emails. We worked our butts off and eventually, after almost a year, had earned a whopping $247000! We tried to cash in, but were then told that no cheques could be issued. Monies were only paid into American bank accounts. They said they were an international company and anyone in the world could join. But, not get paid.

We often see special promos on free hosting, free domain registration and other all too important services. All looks great from the outside, but as soon as we apply we find out that we are unfortunately not eligible. I don't know how many times I have won prizes. Cash, free products, a trip, ocean cruises, but on trying to claim them, I'm told they don't apply to South Africans.

Very often, freebies are included to sweeten a deal. I joined a music site for mp3 downloads. The price was inclusive of a whole bunch of bonuses. I was to get meal tickets, petrol (gas) coupons, membership of some or other club, discounts on shopping, blah, blah, blah. Needles to say, I joined and paid full price, but never got any of the goodies that all my American counterparts received. I am very into music and 2 years ago I purchased Music Match Jukebox, with free updates for life, access to the online music shop and full usage of something I think was called Radio Gold. It was full access to 150 live radio stations. After I received my purchase, all I had was the jukebox and the promise of updates. On enquiry, I was told "Sorry, but this offer doesn't apply to you", but I paid the full price. Why don't they tell us before we pay? Why don't we get a discount? This seems to be common practice and apart from the obvious discrimination and disappointment is false advertising.

Anyway, these are some problems I have experienced, but not really connected in any way to our functionality at internet marketing. What are the problems facing South African marketers? More in the next article.

Part 5

We have covered quite a few problems facing South Africans already and here are some more.

Overseas companies, particularly those in the U.S.A, offering opportunities, services and resources, usually require a fixed email address, at the time of joining. This is to prevent temporary accounts and others such as Hotmail, from being used, as it is very easy to cancel, or change, after joining and the marketer is left with a useless address, in his contact list. South Africans have another problem, in that most of our suffixes, such as .co.za, telkomsa, za, are not allowed. Usually your country is required and many of the drop down menus have small, insignificant countries such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mauritius, Ivory Coast listed, but not South Africa. So we have to get ourselves an email address with an overseas company, just to comply. Why?

We, as South Africans, have no shopping carts, or payment processors, suitable for international use, or integration, into overseas websites and the biggest culprit is PayPay. They are the first choice, worldwide and any marketer not offering PayPal, as a means of payment, is seriously disadvantaged. Why then, do they not deal with South Africa? Sure, you can make a purchase through them, but they will not collect monies for you, or allow you to make a withdrawal, if you are South African. Other smaller countries are catered for, but not S.A. There are other options, but none as popular. Most payments, affiliate plans and opportunities, pay through PayPal. I joined dozens of respected affiliate plans and spent a great deal of effort, on advertising, before I found out the truth.

A few months ago, I was experiencing the common problems all new marketers face. I knew what I wanted to do, but not how to actually get it done. I'm talking about the setting up, in order to start business. I needed a domain name, a website, content and products, a hosting service, a shopping cart, a mailing list facility, a form for grabbing visitor's details, a payment processor, or two, etc etc. You know what I'm talking about. There are so many options available. The web is full of them. Some are free, some cheap, some having special offers, but which was the best for my needs? Nobody tells you that sort of information. How much space do you need for a bookstore, how much bandwidth do you need for customer downloads? How does the speed affect you? I had played around a bit with wysiwyg editors and done a little html coding. I had used a couple of free websites and hey, the last one I built without their website templated builder. I thought I was getting good, but still a little out of my depth. That scared me a bit, so I decided to look for a ready made, turnkey business. They all say the only thing you need to do is to enter your password and account details, then sit back and watch the money roll in. Well I eventually found something that sounded ideal. It was expensive, but I thought I would be saving in the long run. I wanted to sell ebooks, articles, plr, courses and so on. I paid for this business, as I had seen the example and even test drove the shopping cart prior to purchase. Just when I thought I had found a shortcut to starting my business, the problems began. What problems? Read the next article to find out and to see the solution.

Part 6

We were talking about the problems I encountered after I had bought the bookstore. Well firstly, the whole bookstore was inphp with cpanel control panel, my sql and a whole lot of Greek terms. You remember I had worked with online and offline editors in wysiwyg and a little html. Well now I was lost. I was warned not to try to edit in an html editor, or I would corrupt the php. I had never used these before and couldn't understand why I couldn't find the pages, to edit them. Then I found that the currencies shown on the products were not compatible with the Rand, but I thought so what, I'll just sell in dollars. Then I found that PayPal was not an option. Damn, but hey, I could still use NoChex, or the other one, I forget the name. No way, Jose, those weren't allowed either. I had to have a banking account in USA or UK. I eventually got EGold to work, but how many people pay with gold? That bookstore is still sitting, gathering dust.

There are no local, South African internet companies, for memberships, product sourcing, resources, search engine optimisation etc, so we have to look abroad. Although these are offered reasonably, overseas, we are still subjected to the exchange rate. At present the rate is 7 to the $, 14 to the Pound and around 9 to the Euro, but even so, it is usually cheaper, than our own prices and of course you are spoilt for choice.

Training is another area seriously lacking. With all the conferences, seminars, teleseminars, video training and group discussions unavailable to us in S.A, how are we expected to learn and to keep abreast of developments? Dial up is not powerful enough and anyway it is limited to times between 7pm and 7am, which is a bad time, as even if you stay up all night, it is roughly midnight to midmorning in the States. So how do we learn?

So, with a very limited number of companies prepared to do business with us, with our lack of choice, with our very expensive internet service, with very little access to all the great offers, with our SA email addresses, with our antiquated dial ups, without access to genuine training videos, with the exorbitant exchange rate, with our different spelling, without any reciprocal banks or payment processors, without a compatible shopping cart, with the scams and rip offs and all the rest we have discussed, can South Africans ever hope to get involved in internet marketing?

The truth is rather bleak. Nobody is worried about us, or the problems we have and nobody seems to care. The big "guru" marketers don't seem to be able to think outside their statelines and regard us as a waste of time. They are happy to take our money, though. But wait, there does seem to be a solution for you. As I said earlier, I have teamed up with two of the world's top marketers and together, we are trying to resolve these issues. We will put together a complete, turnkey package deal, a ready to run business, with domain, hosting, website, content, decent affiliate plans, a stream of products, an exclusive membership, a working shopping cart and payment processor, training and ongoing support, a proven plan, optimisation, adsense and other monetised methods for those poor South Africans, who want to be marketers. The hardest part of having your own business, is setting it up and getting it working. You will be able to enter the market place and do very well for yourselves, with our help, so in the meantime, there are a few things you must do.

Spam Scams: How Not To Become A Victim

All spam emails we receive every day in tens or hundreds are annoying and disgusting. But the worst of them are scams, hoaxes, and illegal schemes aimed at defrauding you of your money, private information, and even your life. Being aware of how the spam scams work you will be able to protect yourself against the spammers-fraudsters and not to become a victim of their fraudulent schemes.

A lot of spam scams arrive in the form of a great investment offer. It usually works as a Pyramid scheme. Spammers ask you to pay money for a membership, goods, or simply to "invest" promising you much money as revenue. Your revenue will come from those people who will invest after you. Your investment is distributed to those who joined before you. At some point the pyramid ruins because there are not enough new investors to keep the money flowing. The spammer is at the top of the pyramid and he is the only one who benefits. The scan may not always look like an investment offer. The spammers can ask you to distribute some advertising letters to a list of email addresses, for remuneration. Although they will tell you that the list contains only opt-in email addresses, its not true, and you will be sending spam directly from your computer.

Another fraudulent scheme you may meet looks like a letter coming from a company that you do business with. Usually the spammer asks you to follow a link within the message supposedly to update your account. But actually this is done to worm you out your personal and financial information. If you click on that link, you will be brought to a page that will look like a companys web site. While you are logging in or filling the form in, the program is recording your keystrokes and all your private information account number, user name, password, social security number is disclosed. Never click on the links included in such emails. Just open a companys web site in a separate window and check your account details out.

Nigerian spam is one of the most dangerous email scams. The mechanism of the scam is simple. The spammer sends you a badly spelled letter on behalf of a government official, deposed ruler, or relative of a ruling family asking you for help. They have some goods, money, or jewels that they cannot access due to political reasons. They ask you to allow them transfer large sums of money into your bank account. They promise to remunerate you for your kindness, or even leave all money to you. Attractive offer, isnt it? Dont be a dolt, dont believe them. They tempt you into a trap. Their object is to obtain your account number and bank transfer information. They also may ask you to send them a fee to bribe some corrupt government officials. Further you may receive additional officially looking letters where you will be asked to provide further documents, private information, and money. When they have played with you long enough, or believe that you may suspect to be led on, they will rob you and quite.

Take care! Dont react upon any spam message whatever tempting offer it contains. Delete it at once, or let an anti-spam filter delete all spam before you download it into your inbox.

Recovery From PC Failure Using Windows XP's Restore Point

Have you ever done something to make an improvement and later regretted it?It would be awesome to be able to go back in time and undo the the thing that were supposed to make an improvement.

While life in general will not allow us to return to an earlier time to make changes, we computer users do have such an option should we experience problems with our Windows XP operating systems.

If you update or install the wrong device driver for your video card, and you delete accidentally delete a critical Windows file, so what.

You can simply use Windows XP's Restore Point feature and, Tada, you're back on track and recovered that deleted file.

Restore Points are snapshots of the state your operating system was in during that time.Windows XP automatically creates a restore point when it senses a major change in your operating system. And Restore Points are created every 24 hours as a safety measure. But you can create a Restore Point manually any time you feel there is a need.

If you have a change of some sort that causes problems with the operating system, you can tell Windows XP to revert to any Restore Point established before the problem occured. After the rollback, every change in the operating system that happened after that Restore Point is eliminated.

Restore Points are generally used when you experience such pc problems as extremely slow performance of the system. Your computer responds far more slowly that it did before you installed or updated something.

Other times to run Restore Point is when your system stops responding after an update or installation. Be sure to create a Restore Point before making any significant change to your computer's software or configuration.

To set a Restore Point, click on Start, point to All Programs, click on Accessories, System Tools, and then click on System Restore. When the System Restore windows appears, click on the button labeled "Create A Restore Point" and click Next.

Enter a description of the restore point, something like "Before scanner device driver install" and click the Create button.A notification will inform you that a Restore Point was made. Now click the Close button and you're all set.

Reverting to a Restore Point is as easy as create one.Click on Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore. When the System Restore window appears, click on the "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time" and then click on the Next button.

Choose the date on which you set the Restore Point and click the Next button.Review the information presented and save any open files.Shut down any other programs that may be running.

Click on the Next button and now your computer will restart. As it restarts, it will present a message informing you of the restore point. Click OK and you're done.

After reading all about setting and reverting to restore points, you should make a known restore point if you have not done so already.Whatever you do after reading this article, don't say I'll get to it soon.Familarize yourself with this feature and create a restore point one.

You should try Restore Point and see how it works before you need it.Create a Restore Point now and update something. You can update Windows Media Player for example.

After the update or the installation of a program, wait a day or so and go back to Restore Point.Revert to the Restore Point you created and see if the old version of Windows Media Player comes back.Or see if that old device driver is present.

Doing a simple task like this can and will boost your computer skills and give you much more confidence in yourself and the Windows XP operating system.

Automated Big Ticket Internet Home Businesses With 6-Figure Income Potential

I hate to admit it, but I piddled around the internet for four and a half years trying to generate the kind of big income I originally had envisioned for my home business. But like so many well-intentioned home business owners, big success with exciting profit potential eluded me.

Sure, all of my businesses were profitable right from the start, so in that sense, I was successful. But six-figure income potential? Im afraid not.

Then, by sheer luck I discovered automated, internet home businesses that were selling highly-profitable, big ticket items. And what, pray tell, were they selling? Why, something that everybodyincluding myself seemed to be looking for: A highly profitable turnkey home business opportunity!

In the beginning, the price for these automated home businesses seems a bit rich, but what are you being given in return? The potential to make $1,000 to $3,000 per sale! That certainly beats the heck out of selling $29.95 ebooks or trying to empty my garage of unneeded items so that I can sell them on eBay!

But that isnt all. The success potential ratchets up from there, for while you have to refer your first sale up to your sponsor if youre a top tier member, the first sale of each and every person you sell after that is yours to keepas well as each first sale each of these people make as well as each first sale of every person they bring on and on and on infinitum.

People erroneously think of these as pyramid schemes. But after doing some research on the internet, I now realize that automated home business opportunities like these are commonplace and have been around for years. Its just that up until recently, they have offered small ticket, nickel and dime retail products.

With these automated businesses, you not only sell valuable home business how-to materials, but the actual marketing system itself.

Typically you get a state-of-the-art storefront complete with a video that describes the home business opportunity, testimonials, information on the home business and wealth creation productsthings only top-tier internet marketers can afford.

And it doesnt end there. After a prospect requests a call back from your site, they receive a phone call from a team leader who is earning a 6-figure income using the system that can walk your prospect through the home business opportunity.

And what is your job? Getting people to your site. But for some of these automated businesses, even this is an off-the-shelf operation in which you utilize the companys lead generation software, for a small additional charge.

I know from my own experience that the internet is a cruel place to the average home business owner. Its populated by marketeers who are far more savvy than the average home business owner, and they have far deeper pockets.

These big time operators own highly searched keywords and phrases. For everyone else, its a constant daily struggle for good search engine placement, lots of links referring to their sites and on and on and on.

Not here. Because of the powerful and increasing demand for highly profitable home business opportunities and the collective strength of all the business owners who are out marketing these automated systems, the lowly work-at-home business owner finally has some search engine clout!

AJAX & SEO - Are They Compatible?

Many travel and holiday websites are now utilizing AJAX. AJAX is not new, but it is developing into a major buzzword in IT departments and at web developers. It's also a potential source of friction between IT/development and marketing.

AJAX is short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, a development technique designed to create interactive web applications. AJAX makes web pages faster loading and more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server so that the whole page does not have to be reloaded each time the user requests a change. This is meant to increase the web page's interactivity, speed, and usability. One of the "classic" AJAX applications that most people are familiar with is Google Maps.

There are some major benefits to implementing AJAX on a travel or holiday websites. It can assist in delivering an improved user experience through faster loading, improved page interactivity and enhanced visual presentation. There is also the benefit of reduced bandwidth usage as smaller packets of data are downloaded rather than whole web pages.

However, there is a price to pay for delivering this enhanced user experience. The problem is that search engines can't see your AJAX delivered content or navigation as they are unable to run the Javascript code necessary to generate the HTML content. If the search engines cannot access your content or follow your navigational links you could be seriously restricting your site's exposure in the search engines.

There is no doubt that AJAX is here to stay, at least until something better comes along. It's also likely that the major search engines will become more adept at spidering and indexing AJAX generated content. However, until they do, the simple solution is to avoid using AJAX where it is not needed on your site. If you do intend to use AJAX make sure that your IT department or web developer create real links and HTML content to feed the spiders with.

My Review of the JVC Digital Video Camera

My brother is an amateur film-maker. It was he who introduced me to the wonderful JVC digital video camera. He loved it so much that I was tempted to buy one of my own. After a few years I finally had enough dough to purchase my very own JVC digital video camera. I had no idea that I would be in for quite a surprise.

After buying it I began a thrilling adventure as an amateur film-maker. The quality you get from this amazing camera was close to that of feature length films made in Hollywood. As long as you have proper lighting, and acquire a competent sound boom, you can make a decent movie with the help of a JVC digital video camera. All at the cost of the camcorder and the editing software needed to put your movie together.

I become hooked with the idea of being a film-maker after trying out my JVC digital video camera. Watching movies is great, but it pales in comparison to the thrill you can get from making your own movie. I was also able to involve my fiends in my new found hobby.

We would fashion out a script and with my JVC digital video camera and a few necessary filming equipment, we were on our way in making a potential blockbuster. It usually takes a couple of weeks to finish a respectable twenty minute film.

We would then get together and watch the finished product and try to figure out ways to improve our project. The JVC digital video camera is also excellent for filming the final project. WE entered our project in a amateur movie contest and although we have yet to win a competition our work elicited a good bit of encouraging feedback.

Striking Accessories For Your Equipment

Though there are many products available in the market but to enhance the functions of these products, there are accessories. These enhancements serve as additional benefits for the products. For various products, there are different types of enhancements available in the market.

MP3 is an essential item used by most of us to catch up our favorite music. However, there are also many accessories that can be used along with this MP3 player. One such accessory is a holder of MP3 players. It averts any damage or harm to a player. It is a good investment option as this improves the functional life of a player and makes the money worth spending for. There are also remote controls that can be purchased for MP3 players. This helps in controlling the functions of players without moving from a place. It is specifically beneficial in cars. This is because while driving people who do not want to distract their attention from the road can attach these remotes onto the steering wheel of their vehicles. This way they can easily adjust the volume and channels without any hassle. Another product relating to music is iPod. It is generally accessible in two colors, white and black. Moreover its cases are available in all the colors of the rainbow.

There are also accessories that can be used with spy or hidden cameras. Wireless hidden cameras can be put into sunglasses. There are special spy camera glasses that are used. They can also be hidden in nosepieces and are capable of capturing images. They also allow a wearer to record everything without anyone else realizing it. These look just like our normal sun glasses. However, these glasses are especially used in criminal journalism and spy journalism so as to collect solid evidence against criminals that can be further produced in a court. Increasing crime rates has also lead to an introduction of many equipment and accessories for safety and self-defense. Pepper sprays and stun guns are the equipment of self-defense that has come up. This, when sprayed, hinders the action of an attacker for few moments. This gives a victim an opportunity to run away from the place. Stun gun is a devise used for low ampere shock with a high voltage put onto an attacker. This also disables the attacker for a small while so that benefits the victim a lot.

Needless to say, along with the products their accessories have made the life all easier to live.

Uses of the .NET and ASP.NET Infrastructures

Microsoft's .NET technology is a technology designed to connect. What to connect? Well everything that can be connected through software - people, systems, computers, and other things and devices.

A more thorough definition of .NET would be that it is a top level domain, initially designed to be used by Internet Service Providers, but now it has expanded and everyone can make use of a .net domain. It uses the Internet DNS (domain Naming System) and it is an abbreviation of the word 'network'.

.NET can hold servers that provide web services or the tools needed to create these services.

What are Web Services and their benefits? Well they can be called enhancements that help businesses expand and connect with their customers and partners. Their benefits are that they make the communication between business partners much easier and even increase the profits by making a business known and available to much more people through the help of the Internet.

An Important part of the .Net technology and framework is the ASP.net set of technologies. These web development technologies are used in the creation of Websites and Web services usable on the .NET infrastructure.

ASP.NET was built by Microsoft from one of their older technologies and web programmers can use any programming language they want to write ASP.NET, from Perl to C# and of course Visual Basic.NET and any other language understood by the .NET technology.

The advantages of the ASP.NET technology are that it makes building Websites, Web applications and Web services very easy and with less code that older languages. Also, the applications compiled in ASP.NET run faster and with less errors

You can find many free tutorials and documentation about how to use the .NET framework and about the ASP.Net platform so getting started in this domain can be pretty easy. You can also find many examples amd articles about things that are easy to make and that you can study and use for learning and understanding. After learning a little you will be able to create easy-to-build applications that allow users to organize their own page's appearance.

Also, if you're going to use ASP.NET applications you should get one of the specially designed software packages for ASP , like Visual Studio.NET or the ASP.NET Web Matrix.

So the .NET and ASP.NET technologies are very popular and have an extremely large number of business-enhancing uses and applications.

A good place to start learning more about how people-ready applications and systems can be built using the .NET 2.0 framework is the Microsoft Practice section of www.unitekconsulting.com.

Experience The Entertainment Of Home Theaters Right In Your Living Room

Watching movies is a neat escape from the stressful lifestyle we live in. Watching movies in a wide screen and surround sound take you far away and into the movie scene you are watching. You watch it as if you were there in the movie scene. Of late, we can only experience this escape in a cinema. However, modern technology may be able to provide this same sight and sound experience right in your own living room. We will discuss the basic components of a home theater system in this article. Read on to understand how these basic components can deliver the best cinematic experience to a home theater system.

Home theater experts state that the most important consideration in setting up a home theater system is the size of the room where you will set up the home theater system. The most important component of the home theater system, which is the television, is dependent on the size of the room. Although, the recommendation is 27 inches television set at a minimum is necessary for your home theater set up. It is also a recommendation that a flat television is good for a home theater system because it exhibits fewer glares and produces a crisper image. Another major component of a home theater system that depends on the size of the room is the speaker. The number of speakers for your home theater system is dependent on the size of the room. You may add up to six speakers from the basic three speakers if you want a more lifelike sound. Adding a subwoofer may also be good to achieve a complete surround sound like in the movie theaters. Three speakers should be the minimum; you may go up to six if the room is big.

Another major for your home theater system is the DVD player. It is a recommendation that DVD players with progressive scan will be the best choice. This is because progressive scan produces sharp and flicker-free pictures. This however points back to the choice of television unit; you may need to check if the flat television set supports progressive scan signals. You may also acquire a five-disk carrousel DVD player. This will avoid having to stand up from your seat to change discs every so often. A minor consideration is the power rating that will determine how loud your speaker can be. Of course, almost all these depend on the size of the room to where the home theater system is going to be set up. Small room requires from few types of equipment, bigger rooms may require more and adding home theater furniture to your home theater system may be best. A bigger room thus requires more investments. A smaller room might require fewer but of good quality equipments to avoid the too basic feel of the home theater system.

Finally, you may acquire a beautifully designed home theater system if you consider hiring a home theater expert. If you can afford this, it will be best for you because the home theater expert will be able to effectively design and set up your home theater system. Your home theater designer may also add some features like home theater seating and other home theater furniture to be able to give the complete home theater package that closely resembles a real movie theater. Having the finest and high-quality home theater system will give you the most sought after set up that you could flaunt and enjoy to the max.

"Folksonomies" - a New Viral Marketing Tool

A new consumer phenomenon is called "tagging" or "folksonomies" (short for folks and taxonomy). Tagging is powerful because consumers are creating an organizational structure for online content. Folksonomies not only enable people to file away content under tags, but, even better, share it with others by filing it under a global taxonomy that they created.

Here's how tagging works. Using sites such as del.icio.us - a bookmark sharing site and Flickr - a photo sharing site - consumers are collaborating on categorizing online content under certain keywords, or tags.

For instance, an individual can post photographs of their iPod on Flickr and file it under the tag "iPod." These images are now not only visible under the individual user's iPod tag but also under the community iPod tag that displays all images consumers are generating and filing under the keyword. Right now Flickr has more than 3,500 photos that are labeled "iPod."

Tagging is catching on because it is a natural complement to search. Type the word "blogs" into Google and it can't tell if you are searching for information about how to launch a blog, how to read blogs, or just what. Large and small sites alike are already getting on to the folksonomy train. They are rolling out tag-like structures to help users more easily locate content that's relevant to them.

Although tags are far from perfect, marketers should, nevertheless, be using them to keep a finger on the pulse of the American public. Start subscribing to RSS feeds to monitor how consumers are tagging information related to your product, service, company or space. These are living focus groups that are available for free, 24/7. Folksonomy sites can be also be carefully used to unleash viral marketing campaigns - with a caveat. Marketers should be transparent in who they are, why they are posting the link/photos and avoid spamming the services.

How Does Apple Manage To Dominate The Mp3 Player Market With The Ipod

In the realm of MP3 players, Apple (producer of Macintosh computers and related technology) is the definite dominator when it comes to having the most highly-purchased products among the other manufacturers. One of the main reasons for this simple as it may seem is basically out of customer loyalty to the originator of this portable audio device. It was the first of its kind on the market and still remains today, the brand of choice.

Apple actually released the iPod in 2001 as a portable audio device that was strictly compatible with Macintosh technology. Working in unison with Apples iTunes, Mac users were able to create, maintain and utilize countless numbers of sound files in their music and audio libraries. However, due the growing popularity among its customers, many Windows users were feeling left out and wanted to be able to take advantage of this great new way of listening to and downloading music and other audio as well. So, in 2002, Apple produced a new form of iPod that was compatible with both Macintosh and Windows interfaces. And later in 2003, they gave the Windows world a compatible version of iTunes as well. This made the audio playing and storing consumer market very happy.

Then eventually, other companies like Sony and Samsung began producing MP3 players as well but have never reached the level of success that Apple has with their iPods. And moreover, it doesnt look like those competitors ever will. Statistics show that Apple and their iPod actually dominate the MP3 player market with a 70% selling advantage over other manufacturers of these types of portable MP3 audio devices. And when it comes to hard-drive based MP3 players, theyve got a whopping 90% lead over the competition.

The main reasons consumers complain about the non-Apple brands of MP3 players is that not only are the competitor versions too expensive, but they are strongly lacking in form. They just dont have the ease of operation in terms of user-interfacing and also dont include a lot of the convenient and cool features that the Apple iPod does either. Generally speaking, the iPod emphatically outperforms the other manufactures brands of portable audio devices by a mile (or more).

And with the addition of Intel into the Apple product line as a whole, the iPod is only going to continue to be improved upon causing it not only to remain the favorite, but also further expand its appeal throughout the music-loving universe.

How to Predict the Future using Spinning Objects

Throughout history people have sort ways of finding spiritual or mystical guidance in their every day lives. Consulting the Oracle, Soothsayer or village wise person who had the gift of seeing into the future was common practice in ancient times. However, you dont have to be a psychic to predict the future. In the simple system of Cyclomancy, a revolving device, such as a wheel or revolving circle can be very effective tool for divination (ability to foretell the future by intuitive rather than scientific or rational means). The practice of Cyclomamcy may have been the origin of the roulette wheel as a game of chance. The wheel-of-fortune found at fair grounds which stops on prize-winning numbers or the TV Wheel of Fortune are also based on this concept. Cyclomancy has survived as the popular party kissing game spin the bottle, or in a combination of Truth or Dare. In this variation, the spinner gets to ask the person whom the bottle points to an intimate, personal question, which must be answered truthfully. In all these methods, the decision of the wheel is automatically fulfilled, so it is not surprising that many people believe that questions concerning their future can be answered by a similar contrivance.

CYCLOMANCY dates from time immemorial, and takes its name from the Latin word Cyclomantia and from ancient Greek Kyklos meaning a circle. Spinning arrows may be used instead of revolving wheels for telling fortunes. In occult practices the wheel will have astrological signs, numbers, letters, words or mystical symbolic makings around it. The powerful archetypal symbol of the Wheel of fortune in the tarot deck reminds us of how random and unpredictable life can be. And that we are all subject to the workings of fate and Karma, in that what ever he/she sows he/she shall reap.

One form of divinational consultation is in finding geographical direction. When at a crossroad, take a bottle and lay it horizontally on the ground, and spin it. When it stops spinning, the neck of the bottle will point to the road where your destiny lies. Alternatively, before spinning the bottle ask a question with regards to the different directions, for example in which direction will I have the most fun, view the best sights or meet a new friends. Variations of the method use knifes or spinning tops.

In order to get started, first you're going to have to check your logic mind behind. Its a bit like visiting the cinema and as you walk in the door agreeing with yourself that for the next 90 minutes or so you will suspend your sense of reality. Trusting your intuition is a lot like that, once you begin to trust that your question will be answered, somehow the cosmic wheels begin to turn and you will receive the answer to your question.

This handy do-it-yourself divination tool can be used when seeking advice or answers to questions regarding past, present or future events. To make your own Cyclomancy fortune telling wheel, first cut a piece of card to the size of a dinner plate. Using a pen, divide the wheel into ten equal sections so that it looks similar to the spokes of a cycle wheel. Next pierce a hole in the centre with a skewer. Take three deep breaths and relax, as you do this gently begin to focus on the question that you would like to ask. When you feel ready spin the wheel and see where it stops. In a similar way an arrow could be secured to the centre by a pivot so that it freely revolves when given a sharp spin, the number that the arrow stops on being the significant one.

The analysis of the number is based on the ancient system of Numerology also known as Arithmomancy. The system was popular amongst early mathematicians such as Pythagoras who believed that each of the numbers one to nine had its own psychic or spiritual significance.

The interpretation of the numbers is as follows :

One - New beginnings, ideas and inspiration. Exciting new changes ahead in love, business, education.

Two - A need for tact and diplomacy. Twos denote balance and harmony and fair play. Hidden things that need to be revealed. A period of waiting.

Three - Birth, pregnancy and marriage. A reason to celebrate or to go out and have fun. Your ships are coming in. Successful teamwork.

Four - Security, home, property, DIY around the house, time to take a break go on holiday.

Five - Problems to overcome, a time to be assertive, excess energy at your disposal. Watch out for jealousy and conflict amongst friends..

Six - Time to give and receive in many ways, money, time, support. A time of success, meeting old friends, compassion, travel. A time for making choices.

Seven - Staying in control via understanding, time for clear thinking, beware of deception, need to check security, time for evaluating a situation.

Eight - Determination to achieve goals, on-the-job study, dissatisfaction with an aspect of your life, feeling trapped, time to move on, end of delays.

Nine - Light at the end of the tunnel, preparation for a new beginning, smugness, and success, unnecessary worries.

Ten - Change, the end of a journey, success, family gatherings, support of others, idealism, a sense of community.

Know the Mechanics that Separate Winners from Losers!

Are you an if-er or a do-er?

If you've been around the promotion circle long enough and even if you have not, you probably heard this one before, test, test, test! But before you embark into a promotional odyssey for your evolving publication full speed ahead, it is a good idea and very essential that you market test your offer (s), if you want a full fledge promotion to give you the best results.

For those who feel this to be utterly unnecessary consider for a moment all the possible missed - opportunities:
A) What if this or that approach could have worked better?
B) If only I would of have used a stronger or more conservative angle.
C) Made the overall offer more appealing?
D) The message better understood?
E) What if, we would have provided a more value driven premium?
F) Lowered/raised prices... or included a better response vehicle?

The alternatives? A more sound, efficient mailing - less wasted resources, money better allocated, greater savings and bigger profits!

Testing your offer involves extra efforts and perhaps a few additional dollars, but the end results is a much more informed, and profitable campaign but... that's not all.. a learning experience as well.

A learning experience because through the process of implementing different promotional approaches you are constantly learning the mechanics that separate a winner from a loser and discovering other much more successful approaches that otherwise would have remained hidden.

Okay, so how do I go about finding my offer true potentials you ask? Much obliged, first you must truly understand all the pieces that make up your promotional package, much like going back to basics.

You are probably familiar with the old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" well, in this case, "the best approach is worth many dollars saved, thousands earned", should fit the bill (no pun intended).

More to the point and to start you off here is a non-inclusive list of some familiar promo, components and terms, feel free to add others as necessary to conform to your specific offer (s), one word though... it is in your marketing - promotional best interest not to undermine any of these elements, as basic and redundant as they may appear to be:

Program-Format, what is the goal... best aesthetics?

Typestyle-Size, does it convey meaning by itself, is it attractive, consistent throughout?

Headline-Subhead, does it grab your attention, pulls you into the rest of the copy/letter?

Opening-Closing Copy, are your P.S.' and P.P.S.' effective?

Illustration (s)-Line Art, Photo, can it translate into a thousand words on it's own or does it need text for support?

Pricing-Low, Competitive, why?

Premium-Incentive, is that the best you can do?

Ordering-Urgency, Deadline, future price increase?

Mode of Payment-Immediate, Conventional (Money Order, Check etc.), Credit Cards, Internet alternatives?

Response Vehicle (1)-Form, Card, Postpaid?

Response Vehicle (2)-Plain Envelope, Postpaid?

Now reach deep down within your marketing/ promotional well of knowledge (however broad or limited it might be), and ask yourself... do I really understand this offer from my target (consumer/B to B/ recipient) point of view, is this program well thought out and the message properly structured?

How will the message be perceived... is it plain enough for the average consumer - smart enough for B to B or could it be improved and where?

One thing we learned over the years is that, when it comes to promoting your wares, no matter what they may be, there is always room for improvements.. without exceptions.

Okay, still with me? Now that you had a chance to reflect on how well your program is put together, pick any, a group or all of the above listed key components and make changes. For example, change part of, or the whole sales letter... use a different approach, headline. Change the premium/incentive or give additional ones. Your end product should reflect a new concept for the same offer.

Once you are satisfied and your new concept is finished it is time to put it to the test (there goes that word again).

Get both new and previous concepts into the market as affordably as possible, (e.g., if using a Card Pack and only one format but testing different pricing, and circulation reaches an audience upward of a hundred thousand or whatever the allowed mailing minimum is, key - code one format with a number, and or different address). Have your Card Pack rep. Direct Response Agency etc., mail half to a group of prospects and the remainder to another group.

Ad testing follows basically the same procedure as for Direct Marketing (change heading/subhead, typestyle, copy, graphic - if any - offer/ premium or incentive), but with one notable exception. Have Ads placed "split-run" or alternate each other in the same publication, in different areas within that publication or just run both Ads at the same time in different publications even exchanging target publications after so many runs.

What is important, is to test different approaches or angles against each other to see which does better.. One thing is certain, you will be pleasantly surprise at how much more one concept pulls vs. the other. How many more orders - larger profits. You most likely will also be baffled at how well... however higher a price, does vs. the other or, whether a price is more widely accepted than another (when testing prices).

Whichever route you are exploring, allow the campaign to run long enough to really be able to see comparative results. Once you have a chance to assess why and which approach did better, go ahead... and start over again. Against your best campaign producer, if time, and your budget allows it. You'll be surprised at the results and at how crucial Market Testing is, it will save you hundreds.. and earn you thousands! http://golden-quill.com/

Giving the Gift of Cigars

Tis the season for a stogie, fa la la la la, la la la la

For the past few holiday seasons, Ive found that gifts are getting harder and harder to give. Not only has creativity fallen through the cracks, but presents are not as monetarily feasible as they once were: there are televisions for sale that cost more than my car. Because of this, holiday shopping has become an increasing burden, not only for me but for many others. As we find ourselves trapped somewhere between the shopping mall and the holidays of yore when the true meaning wasnt showcased on a display stand at Macys, we think about how it used to be.

There was a time when the holidays were about more than purchasing the latest brand of technology or the most expensive cashmere sweater. It used to be so easy. A tie, a purse, even a bar of soap attached to a rope all fell into the category of a suitable gift for, back then, it was merely the thought that counted. But lately, these gifts have lost their ability to be accepted, and they arent the only ones. I have found that even the hand made card I give my parents as a gift each year is becoming met with less and less enthusiasm, no matter how much glitter I add..

Still, we havent lost this battle yet. With the onset of the season we are given the opportunity to reinvent the true spirit of the holidays; we are given the ability to give a gift that says something grander than simply, I have a huge limit on my credit card. One way we can do this is by giving the gift of cigars.

Why Give Cigars as a Gift?

Cigars may not seem like a run-of-the-mill holiday gift but, in this age of overblown commercialism, their lack of reputation should work in their favor. Instead of representing brand name hand bags or a clothing line overseen by a professional rapper, cigars represent what the holidays are really all about: friendship, celebration, and happiness.

Giving a cigar as a gift conveys that some actual thought, and not just your paycheck, went into the gift giving process. Cigars, possessing a meaningful stigmatism, are often exchanged in the same manner friends exchange a knowing glance, or a comforting pat on the shoulder: they are exchanged in a way that makes them about something more than simply a meeting resembling a swap meet.

What Kinds of Cigars to Give?

The type of cigar to buy simply depends on the recipient. For a cigar novice, cigar samplers make excellent gifts, giving the novice the ability to sample a variety of cigars, finding one he or she truly enjoys. If you dont purchase a sampler, then a box of mild cigars such as the Macanudo from the Dominican Republic or the Casa Torao from Honduras - usually works best for beginners. For the cigar connoisseur, purchasing a box of their favorite brand or a brand you know they are dying to try is an excellent way to go. And, for novices and connoisseurs alike, enrolling them in a cigar of the month club will almost always be met with enthusiasm: its the gift that never gets extinguished, at least not while the membership is valid.

What are Some Unique Cigar Gifts?

You may find that some of the people who you know love cigars are already well stocked, seemingly having more tobacco reserves than Cuba. For these people, a more unique cigar gift may need to be purchased.

From a custom made cigar box to an ashtray engraved with a sentimental message, from an inscription laden cigar cutter to a leather cigar case, any kind of a cigar accessory makes an excellent holiday gift. Perhaps you know someone who could use a humidor or a person who, forever asking others for a light, is desperately in need of a Colibri.

For those who want to add in even more sentiment, purchasing a cigar lover one of their favorite brands and having the band engraved is a present that likely can not be rivaled, providing you with the rare opportunity to give a gift that can be both used and cherished.

Where to Buy Them?

The holidays are a time of mayhem, as people crowd shopping malls, the masses fill department stores, and those with a dial up Internet, surfing the Web to look for gift ideas, wait an hour for a page to load. However, a great amount of this can be avoided if you know what you are buying before hand, giving you the ability to get in, get out, and get home in time to take the turkey out of the oven.

Cigar gifts are one of the easiest gifts to buy, with many local cigar and tobacco shops having a large variety of cigars, and a large selection of accessories. The Internet, a portal that allows you to avoid lines and crowds, also provides several online resources that enable you to purchase any tobacco related item under or grown in the sun. Many of these online shops offer discounted prices and shipping for free.

Giving the gift of cigars or a cigar related item rarely goes up in smoke. Getting away from what has become the new traditional idea of holiday gifts designer jeans, video games, car stereos ironically evokes some old holiday tradition, a tradition filled with goodwill, friendship, bliss, and, of course, tobacco seeds.
